Lots of caregivers want to be more efficient in their caregiving activities. Being efficient means that you’re getting done what needs to be done in a competent and organized manner. What does that require from you?
You’re Educating Yourself as Much as Possible
Educating yourself when you’re a caregiver is absolutely essential. You’re going to encounter a variety of different situations and circumstances that require a depth and breadth of knowledge you might find surprising. Health training, like first aid classes and CPR training, can be absolutely essential. So can learning about your senior’s health issues and what else she might need from you.
You’re Asking for Help Regularly
You can do a lot on your own, but you can’t do it all. There is so much to keep up with as a person and as a caregiver. You need to become as comfortable as possible with asking for help when you need it and even before you truly need it. This is going to help you to spend your time and your energy in the ways that serve both yourself and your senior in the best ways possible. That’s the very definition of efficient.
You Have to Be Taking Care of Yourself
One of the best things you can do for yourself when you’re striving to be a more efficient caregiver is to take time for yourself. Taking care of yourself is going to ensure that you have what you need in order to be a support person for your elderly family member. Taking care of yourself involves doing the small things, like getting enough sleep, and the big things, like taking time away from being a caregiver for a few hours at a time at least.
You’re Still Living Your Life, Even as a Caregiver
The rest of your life does not go into any sort of hibernation when you become a caregiver. You still have all of those obligations and responsibilities, both to others and to yourself, that need to be met. You can’t be a caregiver without also understanding that you do indeed need to continue to live your own life.
If you’re striving for perfection, that’s not a solid goal. What you can do is to strive to be the most efficient caregiver you can be in any given moment. That gives you a lot of space in which to account for good days, bad days, and all the days in between.
