“One Daughter’s Concern for her Mother in Greenville, SC”
Growing up, I would consider my relationship with my mother to be a relatively close one. As I became an adult and moved out, issues arose in our relationship and I ended up spending less and less time with her or even talking to her. As I matured more and she aged, we were able to work through our differences and forged a stronger and closer relationship. Now that she is in her late 70s, I noticed how much she was struggling with some aspects of her personal care.
What I noticed more than anything was that she didn’t seem comfortable. Her legs had weakened to the point where she lost her balance frequently. Even with the assistance of a walker, she still seemed to have trouble going to the car, walking through stores, and sometimes even getting down the hall to the kitchen.
I knew she had trouble in the shower, and we spent a significant amount of money adding grab bars and other safety features, including a shower seat. The more that I seem to do, the more I seem to notice her struggles. Her struggles became my struggles… To find comfort for her.
I didn’t mention my concerns with friends or even other family members. My mother was a very private person and she did not want other people knowing about her issues. Yet I did talk to a coworker about what I was dealing with and I am grateful that I did.
This coworker told me to look into in-home health care services. I did not know much about home care services, but I was willing to try anything for my mother.
I began calling around to various agencies and I even responded to some ads I found in the local newspaper. What I learned was that an in-home care provider, more commonly referred to as a home care aide, could provide a significant support system for my mother to help her live at home and be independent.
Within the first couple of weeks, I noticed a significant change in my mother’s personality and demeanor. She was happier, seemed more comfortable, and was getting involved in activities that I thought she either lost interest in or would never be able to do again.
Home care services changed everything for my mother, and for me. I would suggest anyone who has a loved one who struggles with his or her basic care at home contact in-home health care services in their area and find out what comfort they could offer.
