It’s Never too Late to be a Caregiver in Greenville, SC
Anna grew up in a household with several siblings. She was the oldest of five brothers and sisters and ended up being a default caregiver to most of them. Her mother and father both work full time to support their family, which left Anna taking care of her younger siblings.
When she was an adult, she got married and had a family of her own. She raised her kids and watched them go off to college and ultimately to careers. She didn’t get a full-time job or career for herself as her husband worked and supported the family. She developed friendships and got involved in various community pod projects through the years.
As she reached her 80s, her husband had been long gone and she was close friends with three other women around the same age. Three of her brothers and sisters had also passed away and her remaining sister lived in another country at this point. The last thing that Anna planned on doing was being another caregiver to somebody else. However, she noticed that her best friend, Melissa, was struggling to take care of herself at home. Melissa was on a fixed income and didn’t have any family in the area. Anna was concerned about her, so she decided to take on the role of an in-home care provider for her.
What she found out was that you are never too old and it is never too late to be a caregiver. Even though Melissa could have used assistance for quite some time, Anna simply didn’t think that she should bother taking on this responsibility because of her age and her own health issues.
The truth was that even though Melissa required some assistance, most of the time she needed a friend to talk to. And I lived in the same apartment complex, so walking down the hall to visit Melissa wasn’t a major inconvenience. It took her some time, but she managed to do it fine.
This isn’t the ideal situation, but when you feel as though your options are limited, it is a better option than nothing at all.
