You might be pretty surprised to find just how difficult some of the decisions you have to make as a caregiver really are. They can be overwhelming at times, but you still need to figure out which option is the best for your elderly family member. That’s really difficult to do, which is part of why caregiving is so stressful.
You and Your Senior Won’t Always Agree.
As much as you want to do what your senior wants, that might not always be what’s best for her. For instance, she may want to keep driving, but you know that it’s time for her to stop. That’s a big conflict and you might find yourself second-guessing your decision. Ultimately, though, it’s about keeping your elderly family member as safe and as healthy as possible.
The Big Decisions Are Big for a Reason.
The thing is, those big decisions are big and difficult for a reason. They’re decisions that matter quite a bit. Those decisions are what stand between your aging family member and sure disaster, so it’s vital that you’re making the right choices. That can feel paralyzing for you as her caregiver but you’ll find that they get easier as you go.
Sometimes You’ll Feel Alone.
This is part of why you’ll feel isolated and alone a lot as a caregiver. It’s not the simplest thing ever to be the one making the tough calls. If you’ve got other family members who are willing to pitch in, though, that can make things a little bit easier for you as in individual.
Find a Support System.
Having a support system can be the key for you. If you don’t have other family members who are also involved in your senior’s life and decisions, then it can help to lean on friends. Another idea is to find a support group made up of caregivers just like yourself. These are people who can help you to navigate these difficult waters and get through them.
It’s not easy to be the caregiver and to make some of those hard decisions. But it’s part of doing the best that you can for your aging family member. If you and she have been able to talk about some of these topics beforehand, the process can go a little smoother. Even if you haven’t, just make sure you’re as informed as possible so that you can make the decision that feels right.
