Are You Looking for A New Activity to do with your Patient this MONTH? Try Stargazing

Stargazing and Senior Care in Simpsonville, SC: October is a Great Month for It (and Here’s Why)

For any individual who has even a passing interest in astronomy, such as just looking up at the stars and being amazed at their beauty, October is one of the best months to get out and check out the constellations. It can be a great senior care activity as well.

Why  is October a  great month?

October is ideal, or shall we say optimal, for stargazing because of a combination of factors. First, the heat of summer has basically died down and that means lower humidity levels. When the humidity levels are high, it causes an increase in the appearance of twinkling in the stars. This is because the atmosphere is denser and that makes it more difficult to see stars, planets, galaxies and other phenomenon in the sky October provides a very clear view your binoculars or telescopes.

Another reason why October is a great month for getting out and gazing up at the stars is because it is not yet frigid across most of the country. Sure, there are going to be nights when the temperature gets down into the 30s and maybe even the occasional 20s, but across most of the country the average lows are going to be in the upper 40s to mid-50s. This is a comfortable temperature for almost anyone to spend some time outside stargazing.

For senior home services, the caregiver does not need to have any real experience with astronomy as this is an activity that both the caregiver and the patient can enjoy and learn as they spend more time outside.

You don’t even need a telescope or binoculars, though this will make the experience that much more enjoyable.

What do you need to enjoy stargazing in October?

You need to have warm clothing. Keep in mind that the senior’s body may not produce enough heat to keep warm, so make sure that they have plenty of warm clothing, including a hat and gloves and maybe even a scarf.

You may also want to consider a small telescope or a high-powered binoculars. Anything that will increase magnification by about 40 times would be an ideal device to have.

When you go outside from a warm environment, you will notice moisture forming of the lenses. Carry around a can of compressed air to help keep the lens clear or you can keep the telescope or binoculars outside from daytime until you are going to use them so they acclimate to the temperature better.

As for checking out the stars and determining what is out there that you are seeing, there are many great basic astronomy and constellation books that can guide you through the night sky in October.

If you are senior care provider and are looking for a new and interesting activity to take part in with the patient, this is one of the best ones.
