Senior Care in Charleston SC
In addition to the obvious benefits of providing fresh herbs and vegetables, indoor gardening can actually provide seniors living at home with senior care a positive mental and emotional experience. All your senior needs to grow an indoor garden is a window area with sunlight, a container, some healthy dirt, and some seeds.
Before purchasing the soil, your senior should check with a garden shop on the appropriate consistency and whether it is suitable for indoor gardening. The container itself should have a drainage system as well so that the water has a place to drain.
Benefits of indoor gardening include, of course, the fruits (and herbs) or vegetables of your seniors labor. And while these can be delicious, there is also the intangible benefit of having your senior bring something to life and nurture it. Watching that seedling sprout can have a positive effect on the spirit. In addition, having plants in the home contribute to air cleanliness and quality.
Be aware, however, that indoor gardening is a commitment. Whether it is a matter of keeping the soil moist, trimming dead leaves, or pruning, there is almost always something to be done to care for indoor plants. Your senior will need to learn and understand the watering preferences of their different plants so as not to over-water or under-water them.
Another option is the new hydroponic gardens which quite literally do not require any soil. Many fresh herbs are even sold at grocery stores now that only need to be submerged into water to survive. Basil, for example, can be purchased live in a soil pouch and then only needs to be kept in a glass with water near a window and it will continue to grow and bloom and your senior can enjoy fresh basil all year long.
Other herbs that can be grown in water include sage, thyme, mint, and oregano. If using just water, your senior should avoid distilled water which has all of the minerals removed as the plants will need those to grow. Instead use regular tap or spring water. Put the plant into a container that is not clear glass as the goal is to allow sunlight to reach the plant but not necessarily the water. This will help keep algae to a minimum.
To encourage continued growth year-round, your senior will need to keep clipping at the top leaves. But that is all the effort required.
