Common issues that influence self-esteem include a sudden change in your circumstances such as losing a job, the death of a loved one, or new responsibilities, stress from work, strain in your relationship, or a family crisis
- Be aware of negative thoughts and beliefs. The thoughts and beliefs that you contend with on a daily basis are critical building blocks for self-esteem. Be aware when these thoughts and beliefs become negative, especially when they are coming from yourself or the people who are closest to you as these will be the most detrimental to your wellbeing. Sift them out from the thoughts that are rational and supportive, and push these as close to the front of your mind as you can so that they are what influences you the most often
- Challenge negative thinking. It is not always possible for you to control what is going on around you, but you can control what you think about it. Make it a habit to challenge negative thoughts, recognize when they are irrational and damaging, and replace them with positive versions of those thoughts.
