Senior Care in Charleston SC
There are a number of ways to improve brain function, but few realize these activities can occur during senior care activities. There are methods by which families can participate with their loved ones not only as a socially engaging exercise, but one that is mentally stimulating as well. These efforts help bring families together while simultaneously keeping their loved one’s minds healthy.
Volunteer and Recognize
Seniors love being recognized and appreciated for their efforts within their homes, as well as in their communities. When families join together with their loved one to participate in a volunteer effort such as working at a food bank, volunteering time at a library fundraiser, or selling goods at a community yard sale for example, this provides an opportunity for recognition and respect within the community. Seniors also have the opportunity to play leadership roles, as well, through these volunteer experiences. Therefore, as part of their elder care plan, the addition of volunteering is beneficial.
Laughter is the Best Medicine:
When people are laughing, it’s contagious to all who are around. This is a great feeling for families when visiting their aging loved ones to see them having fun, feeling happy, and enjoying their golden years. Laughter can occur through active conversation, by watching a funny movie, or when reading a funny passage in a book. Not matter how it happens, laughter should be a daily occurrence in the senior’s life. Families can help facilitate this as part of their home care by visiting often with movies or boisterous conversation.
Journaling and Diary Keeping:
Keeping minds busy through writing is a long time ritual for many, but is often forgotten by those who lead busy lives or those who prefer not to take on the task daily. However, when an individual spends time recording their thoughts daily in a diary or a journal, they are actively keeping their mind busy and healthy during those moments. It takes mental strength to put pen to paper, more so then to type, therefore it’s a good idea for handwriting to be encouraged as often as possible during in-home care. These writings will serve as a beautiful legacy later on, too. If handwriting is too painful, though, typing thoughts out on a computer does work just as well for keeping the mind active.
Daily Strolls:
Going for a walk with a friend or elder care provider is an excellent way to keep the mind and body in good health. While walking, seniors have a way of engaging in active conversation with their companion throughout the trip. This conversation tends to carry on throughout the walk and leads onward until they reach their final destination or when they get home. This type of active conversation is casual enough to keep their mind focused, their memory clear, and their thoughts balanced so they can continue engaging in the walk without losing their train of thought. Staying hydrated during these walks is still a priority, though, especially during hot and humid weather conditions.
