Caregivers very often don’t have all the time that they need or want in order to take care of what their senior needs, much less to take care of their own. But there are some techniques you can use that can give you a better shot at success.
Make Sure You Know What You Want
If you don’t know for sure what you want, it’s that much more difficult to get what you want. When you fully understand your goals, your wants, and your needs, you’re going to be able to see where and when to make the changes you need to make. Journaling can help you to figure out what it is that you really want and need, but it might feel odd at first. Give it a chance and dig deeper.
Let Go of Perfectionism
Perfectionism is the enemy of so much, including good intentions. When you’re locked up in your own perfectionism, it’s difficult for you to see so many other possible solutions. You can’t do everything yourself and good enough is sometimes good enough. If you can figure out how to relax your perfectionism a little bit, you might find a lot more ways to make time for yourself.
Get Some Help from Others
Tasks still need to get done, but that does not mean that you are the only person who can complete them. Talk to friends and to other family members about what you’re experiencing and find out if they can help at all. Even if they can’t help, there are other options. Hiring senior care providers is a solid answer because they can handle so much more than you expect. If nothing else, they can definitely ensure that you’ve got someone to stay with your senior while you take time away.
Look at Your Scheduling Differently
How you plan your day and your week matters, especially if you’re trying to carve out more time in your schedule for yourself. Start out by looking at what your priorities are, especially in terms of your own self-care, and schedule time for those priorities first. From there you can fit in other tasks and appointments. Don’t forget to delegate some of those to other people whenever possible.
It’s never easy to make sure you get time for everything that you want to do. But when you adjust how you look at meeting your needs, you can meet yours and your senior’s, too.
