As much as your senior wants to age in place, there may come a time when you and she may need to make another decision for her. You might want to familiarize yourself with some of the signs that can indicate that the time is coming closer to make that decision.
Her Eyesight or Hearing Are Failing Her.
Of all of her senses, your senior’s hearing and her eyesight can be among the most important when it comes to safely aging in place. If she’s unable to avoid obstacles easily or hear when something is happening, she may be in danger more than she realizes. It’s crucial to get her hearing and her eyesight tested regularly so that you know whether she’s experiencing difficulty.
She’s Become Socially Isolated.
There are a lot of reasons why your elderly family member might not be as social as she once was. The problem with social isolation is that it can quickly lead to depression for most people. Even people who like to spend time alone need to interact with others now and again. It might be a good idea to see if family members can stop by for visits. You might also want to help your senior find activities she’d enjoy during which she can meet new people.
She’s Missing or Just Not Going to Appointments.
It’s highly likely that as she ages, your senior’s health will change and that means more appointments with doctors and possibly with specialists. If your elderly family member isn’t making it to those appointments, that can mean that her health suffers as a result. Try to stay on top of when your elderly family member has appointments and look into whether you need to help her get to those appointments safely.
It’s Tough for Her to Keep up with Household Tasks.
It takes a lot more energy than most people realize to keep up with even the simplest household tasks. When your elderly family member is spending most of her energy just getting through each day, she may be letting other things slip through the cracks. This is why it’s helpful to have other family members or elder care providers stepping in to handle those tasks for her.
These are just a few of the signs you should be on the lookout for with your aging adult. You might be able to extend her time aging in place by hiring elder care providers to help her when you’re not able to be there with her. In the end, though, you’ll still need to find a solution that works for both of you.
