Many scammers prey on unsuspecting seniors to be their next victim. The reason for this is because this age group often has more money in the bank compared to that of younger adults, as well as Home-Care-in-Greer-SC more assets. It happens to millions of seniors each year, so it is important that you or a home care provider help protect your loved one from having to suffer from a financial scam.

  • Be careful of both strangers and family members. Sadly, many older adults are the victims of money scams at the hands of their own family members. In fact, 90 percent of elders claim family members stole their money. This can include wiping out the senior’s bank account, stealing items from their home, or offering to care for them in exchange for money. The elder and their caregiver should keep all financial information private unless other family members need to know it.
  • Visit often. If the elder lives alone, they may begin to isolate themselves from friends, family members, and neighbors. Some of these older adults have vision or mobility issues that make it difficult to leave their home, while others may fear getting mugged as soon as they leave their house. If this is a fear your loved one has, encourage them to visit their local senior center for classes and activities that would keep them involved in the community, while also increasing their social circle.
  • Do not buy from strangers. If children in the neighborhood are selling Girl Scout cookies or Boy Scout goodies, it is probably safe to say that these are legitimate purchases. But if an adult were to show up at the senior’s door trying to make a sale, your loved one should be on high alert. Ask the salesperson to show you a formal document that shows what they are selling and how much it is. If they do not have one, the elder should let them know that they will be will to buy when they see that paper.
  • Shred receipts. These days, most companies do not print full credit card numbers on the receipts. If they do, help the elder shred all that has this number in plain sight for scammers to see.
  • Remove their name from multiple lists. If your loved one is being pestered at home with telemarketers calling at all hours, they need to sign up for the “Do Not Call List.” Also, if they are receiving “junk mail” in their inbox or mailbox, they need to remove themselves from these subscription lists.
