Often as a family caregiver it’s not about removing the stress from your life, it’s more about learning how to deal with the stress in a healthy manner.
Look at Problems from a Different Perspective
Sometimes you’re just too close to a particular situation and that’s part of what causes you the stress. Try looking at the issue that is causing you stress and pain from another perspective. Try to put a positive spin on it. If that doesn’t help, try to think about what you would tell a friend who described the same situation to you. What would you say to help her see the situation differently?
Look at the Whole Picture Rather than One Problem
It’s easy to get bogged down in one problem, too. For example, say your loved one is refusing to wear anything but a specific shirt. That’s frustrating, definitely, but take this back to the whole picture. Will that matter a week from now? Probably not. She’ll have moved on to a different item of clothing or you’ll have figured out how to wash it for her so it’s back in good shape. Let those types of issues go because you definitely have bigger concerns that you can save that energy for.
Adjust for Perfectionist Tendencies
If even a tiny part of you is still clinging to the idea that everything needs to be perfect, learn to let go of that. You might even want to talk to a counselor or a therapist who can help you let those go. Perfectionism is only going to keep you in a loop of forever trying to live up to something that isn’t attainable.
Find at Least One Thing to Be Grateful For
Every day and in every situation, look for at least one part of it that inspires gratitude in you. It doesn’t have to be something big, but there’s always something you can feel grateful for, no matter the situation. This keeps you consciously focusing on feeling grateful.
These techniques can require practice, so don’t feel bad if you’re not able to master them right away. Keep at it and give yourself room to adjust.
